No Apologies

Not sorry for the nap. Not sorry for canceling plans. Not sorry for going to bed early. Not sorry for doing absolutely nothing on a Saturday afternoon. Not sorry for protecting your energy. Not sorry for saying no. Rest does not require an apology. It requires a decision.

The apology reflex is automatic. We cancel plans and immediately over-explain. We take a mental health day and feel compelled to justify it. We rest and then describe it to others in language that minimizes it: "I did nothing all weekend, I was so lazy." We apologize for rest because the culture taught us that rest is a deviation from the expected norm of constant productivity.

But apologizing for rest is like apologizing for breathing. You would not say sorry for inhaling. You would not justify your need for water. Some things are so fundamental to human existence that apologizing for them is absurd.

Rest is one of those things. It is not a deviation. It is a requirement. And requirements do not need apologies. They need protection. Every time you apologize for resting, you reinforce the lie that rest is something to be ashamed of. Every time you rest without apologizing, you normalize what should have been normal all along.

No apologies. Not for the nap. Not for the boundary. Not for the evening you spent entirely on yourself. Not for the weekend you chose peace over performance. Rest is a right, not a privilege. And rights do not come with apologies attached.
