Every night, for approximately eight hours, you are completely unconscious. Unresponsive. Unavailable. Out of commission. And every single morning, you wake up to a world that managed just fine without your oversight.
The emails came in but they did not explode. The project progressed or it did not, but either way, the building is still standing. The people in your life navigated their evening without your input. The planet continued its rotation, the sun prepared to rise, and exactly zero catastrophes occurred because you were asleep.
So why do we believe that a single day off will cause everything to collapse? The fear of resting is almost never rational. It is a story we tell ourselves to justify our compulsion to stay busy. What if nobody can handle this without me? What if something goes wrong? What if I fall behind?
But you have been falling asleep every night for your entire life and the world has survived every single time. Your day off will not be the exception. The systems will hold. The people will manage. The work will wait.
Name the fear specifically. What exactly are you afraid will happen if you take a full day off? Write it down. Look at it in the light of day. Then ask yourself: has this fear ever actually materialized? The answer, almost certainly, is no.
