Every article about rest gives the same advice: add a meditation practice. Add a bedtime routine. Add a journaling habit. Add rest to your calendar. But your calendar is already full. Adding one more thing, even a good thing, to a maxed-out schedule is not rest. It is another obligation wearing a wellness costume.
The real solution is not addition. It is subtraction. You do not need to find time for rest. You need to remove the things that are stealing time from rest. The committee you joined out of guilt. The subscription you forgot to cancel. The social engagement you attend out of obligation, not joy. The task at work that could be delegated but you do anyway because it is easier than training someone else.
Subtraction is harder than addition because it requires saying no. It requires letting go of things that seem productive but are actually just busy. It requires confronting the truth that not everything on your schedule deserves to be there.
Identify one commitment this week that is not essential. Not bad, necessarily. Not harmful. Just not essential. Remove it. Do not replace it with something else. Let the space exist. Protect it. That empty space is where rest lives.
The most restful thing you can do this week is not something you add to your life. It is something you take away from it. What one thing are you subtracting?
