The Hum Underneath Everything
That hum of anxiety underneath everything, the one that never fully goes away even when things are objectively fine, has a name: nervous system dysregulation. And it has a solution that does not require a prescription. It requires rest.
The inability to sit still without reaching for your phone. The restlessness that shows up even when your body is tired. The vague sense that something is wrong even when nothing specific is wrong. These are not personality traits. They are symptoms. Your nervous system has been in fight-or-flight so long it forgot how to come home to baseline.
Restlessness is the opposite of rest. And it is epidemic. We are the most stimulated, most connected, most information-saturated generation in human history. Our ancestors processed in a week the amount of information we process before lunch. The hum is the sound of a system that was not designed for this level of input.
The solution is not more input, not even positive input. The solution is less. Less stimulation. Less consumption. Less noise. Your nervous system needs extended periods of low-input quiet to recalibrate. Not one meditation session. Regular, sustained, low-stimulation rest.
If the hum is familiar, if it lives underneath your days like background noise you have stopped noticing, that is not normal. That is your nervous system waving a white flag. The first step is noticing it. The second step is giving your body what it is asking for: genuine, sustained, neurological rest.
