Stop Calling It Self-Care

Stop calling it self-care. Call it what it actually is: survival. Rest is not a luxury you indulge in when everything else is handled. It is your nervous system coming back online. It is the difference between functioning and just surviving. It is the bare minimum your body needs to not break down.

We have wrapped rest in the language of indulgence and then wondered why nobody takes it seriously. Bubble baths and face masks and treat yourself. As if rest is a reward rather than a requirement. As if the only people who deserve it are the people who can afford the aesthetic version.

Rest is survival infrastructure. Your immune system restores during sleep. Your brain consolidates memory and clears toxins during rest. Your emotional regulation system recalibrates when you have margin. Without these things, you do not decline gracefully. You deteriorate rapidly.

The self-care industrial complex turned a biological necessity into a marketing category. And in doing so, it made rest feel optional, purchasable, and performative. Real rest is none of those things. Real rest is free, essential, and deeply unglamorous.

Stop calling it self-care and start calling it what it is: the non-negotiable maintenance your body requires to function. Not to thrive, though it helps with that too. To function. To survive. To not break down. The language matters because the language shapes how seriously you take it.
