Rhythms Over Resolutions

In January you made a resolution about rest. By February it was already slipping. By March it was a distant memory filed under things I meant to do. This is not a character failure. This is a design flaw. Resolutions depend on motivation. And motivation is a depletable resource.

Rhythms work differently. A rhythm does not require motivation. It requires repetition. You do not brush your teeth because you are motivated to. You brush them because it is what you do at that time. The action is not a decision anymore. It is a pattern.

The same principle applies to rest. You do not need more motivation to rest. You need a rhythm. A specific, recurring pattern that becomes so automatic that skipping it feels wrong. Same day each week. Same bedtime most nights. Same boundaries most situations.

Building a rhythm starts small. Choose one rest practice and attach it to an existing routine. After dinner, phone goes in a drawer. Sunday afternoon, no plans. 9:30pm, screens off. One practice, one anchor, repeated until it is not a decision but a default.

The motivation to rest will come and go. The rhythm will hold. What is one rest rhythm you can build this summer that will still be running in October without requiring any willpower to maintain?
