Rest Is Essential
Not optional. Not a nice-to-have. Not a luxury for people with fewer responsibilities. Essential. Like water. Like breathing. Like sleep itself. Rest is a biological requirement that we have culturally reclassified as a lifestyle choice. And that reclassification is destroying us.
Your body was designed for rhythms of rest. Not suggested to rest. Designed to rest. The circadian rhythm, the ultradian cycle, the need for sleep, all of it is hardwired. Ignoring that design does not make you strong. It makes you depleted in ways that willpower cannot compensate for.
Three words can change your week: rest is essential. When rest moves from optional to essential in your mind, everything shifts. You stop negotiating with it. You stop postponing it. You stop treating it as the thing that happens after everything else. It becomes the thing that makes everything else possible.
Essential means non-negotiable. You do not negotiate with your need to breathe. You do not postpone your need for water. And you should not negotiate with your need for rest. The fact that you can survive without it for a while does not mean you should. You can survive a lot of things that are slowly killing you.
If you are making rest non-negotiable this week, say it out loud. Not to anyone else. To yourself. Because the first person who needs to hear it is you. Rest is not optional. It is essential. And your week will reflect whichever one you believe.
