Pre-Set Your Fall Boundaries

The worst time to set a boundary is when you desperately need one. By then, you are already depleted, already resentful, already in the situation that the boundary was supposed to prevent. Boundaries set in crisis are reactive. Boundaries set in calm are proactive. And proactive boundaries are the only ones that actually hold.

Fall is coming. And with it comes a predictable surge of demands: school schedules, work deadlines, holiday preparations, social obligations, and the general acceleration of pace that happens every September. You know this. It happens every year. Which means you have the opportunity, right now, in the calm of August, to set the boundaries that will protect your rest when the storm arrives.

Decide now what time you stop working in the evening. Decide now which social obligations are essential and which are negotiable. Decide now what your response will be when someone asks you to take on more than you can carry. Script it. Practice it. Internalize it before you need it.

The boundary scripts from earlier this summer apply here: I do not have capacity for that right now. I am intentionally offline in the evenings. I would love to but I am protecting my downtime this season. These sentences need to be ready before September, not crafted in real-time while you are already overwhelmed.

Which boundary are you setting for fall? Be specific. Name it, write it down, and commit to it while you still have the clarity and energy to mean it.
