Make Sure It Is Not Just You

Before you quit the job, end the relationship, abandon the dream, or walk away from the thing, make sure it is the thing that is wrong and not just your energy level. Because burnout makes everything look broken.

You stop caring about things you used to love. The project that excited you feels like a burden. The relationship that fulfilled you feels like work. The hobby that energized you feels pointless. And the natural conclusion is that the thing has changed. But maybe the thing is exactly the same. Maybe you are the one who changed. Or rather, maybe you are depleted.

This is burnout's cruelest trick: it does not announce itself as exhaustion. It disguises itself as disinterest. You do not feel tired. You feel apathetic. You do not feel overworked. You feel disillusioned. And because the symptoms feel like dissatisfaction rather than depletion, you blame the thing instead of the pace.

Rest before you decide. Take a week off. Take a month if you can. Remove yourself from the situation long enough for your capacity to regenerate. And then look at the thing again. If it still feels wrong after genuine rest, then maybe it is wrong. But if rest changes how it looks and feels, the thing was never the problem.

Make sure it is not just you. Make sure the exit is not just exhaustion in disguise. Because the version of you that is running on empty is not the version that should be making permanent decisions.
